Key concepts
These two terms are often used as synonyms but describe technically distinct concepts. Acoustic insulation measures how much airborne or impact sound a construction element (wall, ceiling, slab) blocks between two rooms, expressed in Rw or DnT,A decibels under UNE-EN ISO 717-1. It is what every drywall system we build targets: double-board partitions (Rw 50–55 dB), ceilings with anti-vibration suspension (+8–15 dB impact) and wall linings with 40–80 mm Isover or Rockwool mineral wool.

By contrast, soundproofing, in the strict sense, means making a space effectively impermeable to outgoing sound — Rw above 60 dB. Typical of recording studios, engine test rigs or translation booths, it requires box-in-box systems with full-room flotation on Sylomer or Regupol mounts, and costs from €150 to €300/m² installed.
For 95% of projects in Mallorca — flats with noisy neighbours in Palma, hotels next to Magaluf or Punta Ballena, holiday apartments in El Arenal or Cala Millor, offices adjoining workshops in Son Castelló — drywall acoustic insulation hits Rw 40–55 dB, clears the CTE-HR DB-HR minimums (47 dB between dwellings, 50 dB between hotel rooms) and costs 5–10× less than a full box-in-box system.

Problem analysis
Travels through air and excites walls, ceilings and floors into vibrating. Typical sources: voices (55–75 dB), TV and music systems (70–95 dB), live music from bars (90–105 dB) and nightlife traffic.
In Mallorca, airborne noise peaks in mass-tourism areas (El Arenal, Magaluf, Punta Ballena), Palma’s historic centre (bars, restaurants, live music around Plaça Mayor) and multi-family blocks with shift-working neighbours. A decoupled drywall partition with four BA13 boards, 60–80 mm Rockwool and a resilient perimeter band reaches Rw 50–55 dB — the most cost-efficient solution for airborne sources.
Solution: decoupled partitions + double board
Generated when an object hits or walks on the slab, transmitting vibration directly through the building structure. Typical sources: footsteps (up to L'nT,w 70 dB in old floors), falling objects, chairs dragged on tile floors, washing machines and heat pumps.
Impact noise is the hardest to fight because it runs through the concrete slab itself. The effective solutions are a floating floor in the source flat (−15 to −25 dB impact) or a false ceiling with anti-vibration hangers (Isomax, Vibrafix) in the receiving flat (+8–15 dB). In rented flats in Palma, Alcúdia or Manacor, only the receiving side is available, which makes the anti-vibration suspended ceiling the standard retrofit.

Common sources of noise in Mallorca
Mallorca has a noise profile driven by tourism. El Arenal, Magaluf, Puerto Alcúdia, Cala Millor and the Port of Pollença record night-time sound levels of 75–95 dBA during the May-to-October high season, well above the 45 dBA nighttime limit in the Balearic noise ordinance. Hotels and holiday apartments in these areas are our main acoustic clients, both to shield guests from outside noise (Rw ≥ 50 dB on facades) and to insulate adjoining rooms. Acoustic refurbishment works concentrate from October to March, outside the tourist season.

The most effective system for reducing airborne noise between rooms, dwellings or adjoining premises on the horizontal. A drywall partition is built mechanically decoupled from the structure by resilient bands along floor, ceiling and side walls. The 70–100 mm air cavity is filled with high-density mineral wool (≥ 40 kg/m³, Isover Arena or Rockwool Confortpan), and two boards of different thickness (BA13 + BA15) are fitted on each face to break mass coincidence. Certified Rw 50–55 dB, 3–8 dB above the CTE-HR minimum (47 dB between dwellings, 50 dB between hotel rooms).

Uses anti-vibration hangers (Isomax, Vibrafix or Placo Stil F 530) that mechanically decouple the new ceiling from the original slab, blocking structure-borne transmission. With 60 mm Rockwool in the air cavity and a double BA15 board, the system cuts impact noise by 8–15 dB (L'nT,w) and airborne noise by 10–18 dB versus the bare slab. The most effective solution for impact noise, at the cost of 4–8 cm of headroom. A 20–40 mm layer of damping material — compact Rockwool Floorrock, high-density expanded polyethylene or specialised Regupol or Sylomer sheet — is laid on top of the original slab, then a reinforced cement screed and the finished floor are built on top. Because the screed “floats” on the damping layer, impacts do not reach the slab: L'nT,w drops by 15–25 dB. Usually combined with an anti-vibration false ceiling in the flat below for the best results.

The final price is fixed after the free site visit: it depends on the condition of the substrate, existing services and the measured noise level.
Order matters: a room’s insulation is set by its weakest point. A partition rated Rw 55 dB is useless if the door is hollow-core (Rw ≈ 15-20 dB) or the noise flanks through the slab. That is why we treat wall, ceiling and floor as one system: with all three executed, the usual combined improvement is 15-20 dB — the difference between following your neighbour’s conversation and hearing only a faint background murmur.
And one honest caveat before you spend anything on drywall: if the noise comes in through a single-glazed window, we will tell you so at the site visit — replace the window first, add the drywall after. In refurbishments, the target is to approach the values CTE DB-HR demands of new builds (47 dB DnT,A between dwellings), using Placo Phonique or Knauf Diamant boards on decoupled framing with resilient bands and 45-70 kg/m³ mineral wool.
Heavy curtains, foam panels, cork or a bookcase full of books absorb part of the reflections inside your own room: they reduce echo and reverberation, and for recording podcasts or working from home the difference is real. What they do not do is stop the noise crossing the wall or the ceiling: insulation between rooms depends on mass and decoupling — a curtain weighs 2-3 kg/m², an acoustic wall lining 25-40 kg/m² — and no stick-on panel can substitute for that.
Our honest advice: if your problem is echo inside your own room, start with cheap absorption (curtains, a rug, panels) and don’t call us yet. If your problem is the neighbour, the bar downstairs or the street, money spent on foam is money lost: the only route with a measurable result is adding decoupled mass — wall lining, ceiling or floating floor — or fixing the window if that is where the noise gets in.

Legal framework
The Spanish Building Code, in its Basic Document on Noise Protection (CTE DB-HR, Royal Decree 1371/2007 and later amendments), fixes the minimum acoustic insulation that every new-build and major refurbishment in Spain must meet, including all of Mallorca and the Balearic Islands.

Our drywall systems with double BA13/BA15 board and 45–80 mm mineral wool are certified under UNE-EN ISO 10140 to meet or exceed these values in the common configurations. For projects where CTE-HR is mandatory (new-build, premises legalisation, change of use) we supply the technical documentation of the installed system — ficha técnica from Placo, Knauf or Isover plus installation records.
Materials
Reference material for acoustic insulation in drywall systems (Isover Arena, Ursa Terra). High sound absorption across 125–4000 Hz, density of 26–70 kg/m³ depending on the application. Also delivers a thermal lambda of 0.032–0.040 W/m·K, improving the U-value of the wall or ceiling at the same time.
Denser than glass wool (Rockwool Confortpan, Alpharock), which makes it more efficient at low frequencies (bass from music systems, machinery, heat pumps). Density of 45–100 kg/m³, melting point above 1,000 °C. Reaction-to-fire class A1 under EN 13501-1.
EPDM rubber or expanded polyethylene elements (Placo Placotherm, Knauf Acustik, Isolgomma Flex) that mechanically decouple the partition or ceiling frame from the slab. They are the critical piece that breaks the structural acoustic bridge between the drywall system and the existing building, adding 3–8 dB of effective Rw.

Not every plasterboard insulates the same. These are the two acoustic boards we work with daily, with the improvement each manufacturer declares in its technical datasheet.

The real dB gain is set by the complete system (framing, mineral wool, number of boards and decoupling), not by the board alone: the figures above are the ones each manufacturer’s datasheet declares when comparing the same system with standard versus acoustic board. At the site visit we tell you which board pays off in your case — on an already decoupled double-board lining, upgrading from BA13 to Phonique costs little and adds up; on a partition without wool, the wool comes first.

Acoustic insulation blocks noise passing between rooms (measured in dB Rw); acoustic conditioning improves sound quality inside a room (measured by T20 reverberation time). Insulation: linings, partitions, false ceilings with mineral wool, values of 45-65 dB Rw. Conditioning: absorbent panels, microperforated ceilings, baffles, absorption coefficient greater than 0.80.
