Neighbour noise
Upstairs neighbour noise combines airborne noise (voices, TV, music) and impact noise (footsteps, chairs, dropped objects). Each travels differently: airborne noise crosses the slab as sound pressure; impact noise travels through the building structure. A properly built suspended acoustic ceiling — anti-vibration hangers, 50-70 mm mineral wool and double acoustic board — tackles both and delivers a typical 15-20 dB improvement, which in practice turns audible conversations into imperceptible murmur.
Each type of noise calls for a different solution, which is why the first visit includes a sound-meter measurement: sizing a system without knowing how many dB you need to gain is quoting blind. Since 2004 we have delivered 6,000+ works in Mallorca, and roughly half of our current projects include acoustic treatment.

It travels as sound pressure through the slab and the flanking walls that connect both dwellings. The Spanish CTE DB-HR code requires DnT,A insulation of at least 50 dBA between different dwellings; many buildings erected before 1981 fall short because no acoustic requirement existed back then. It is fought with mass and decoupling: a suspended ceiling with acoustic hangers, mineral wool and double board.
It travels through the building structure, not the air, and the CTE DB-HR caps it at L'nT,w of 65 dB maximum. A decoupled ceiling attenuates it noticeably, but the optimal fix is a floating floor in the flat above. If your case is severe impact noise, we tell you at the visit — before charging anything.
Systems
Three systems cover practically every case. The improvement ranges come from Placo and Knauf system datasheets and our published 2026 rates; the exact value of each job is confirmed with the final measurement.
| System | Acoustic gain | Price installed | Height lost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suspended ceiling: acoustic hangers + 50-70 mm mineral wool + double BA15 board | 15-20 dB | €35-50/m² | 12-15 cm |
| Same system with Placo Phonique or Knauf Diamant acoustic board | +3-5 dB extra (manufacturer datasheet) | €35-50/m² (upper part of the range) | 12-15 cm |
| Insulation integrated into a false ceiling already planned in a renovation (wool + anti-vibration suspension) | Up to 15-20 dB depending on system | +€10-20/m² (insulation only) | 12-15 cm |
| Box-in-box booth (recording studios, home cinema) | Over 65 dB reduction | €150-300/m² | Per project |

Honest answer
The short answer: not effectively. Some websites promise ceiling soundproofing with adhesive panels, thin sheets or acoustic paint. We would rather lose a sale than promise that — physics does not negotiate.
Adhesive foam panels (under 1 kg/m²), acoustic paint (under 1 mm thick), curtains or cork. None of them adds mass or decouples the ceiling from the slab: the reduction of your neighbour noise is negligible. At best they improve the internal acoustics of your own room.
Airborne sound insulation follows the mass law: doubling the mass of an element adds about 6 theoretical dB. A single 12.5 mm plasterboard already weighs about 9 kg/m² per the manufacturer datasheet; a real improvement needs mass, a cavity with absorbent and elastic disconnection from the slab. None of that fits in an adhesive product.
Dry construction is the genuinely low-disruption option: a suspended ceiling in 1-3 days per room, no rubble, no skip and dust controlled by extraction. And if you cannot touch the ceiling (rented flat, insufficient height), the honest advice is to say so: rugs and a floating floor upstairs, mediation with the community or treating the party wall can be better investments.
If you want full per-dwelling figures, our guide on the cost of soundproofing a flat in Mallorca breaks down wall, ceiling and floor. And if the noise comes from next door rather than above, see our acoustic insulation service in Mallorca.
Process
We measure the noise level with a sound meter and identify whether it is airborne, impact or mixed noise. We check the available clear height and the condition of the slab.
We size the system (hangers, mineral wool, board type) and deliver a fixed written quote itemising materials and labour. No obligation.
We fit acoustic hangers, framing, 50-70 mm mineral wool and double board with staggered joints, plus perimeter sealing with resilient band. Dry construction, no rubble.
We repeat the measurement under the same conditions to verify the improvement achieved, and hand over the ceiling ready to paint in 24-48 hours.

Regulations
The CTE Basic Document DB-HR on Protection against Noise sets the minimums between dwellings: airborne sound insulation DnT,A of at least 50 dBA and an impact noise level L'nT,w of 65 dB maximum.
The key in Mallorca is the age of the housing stock: buildings erected before 1981 were built with no acoustic requirement at all (the first national standard was NBE-CA-81), and the current DB-HR only became mandatory in 2009. That is why so many flats in Palma, Inca or Manacor sit far below current insulation levels — and why a 15-20 dB improvement is so noticeable.

Read articleA complete suspended acoustic ceiling (acoustic hangers, 50-70 mm mineral wool and double board) costs €35 to €50/m² installed, VAT not included, per our 2026 rates. Indicative examples calculated from those rates: a 12 m² bedroom between €420 and €600; a 20 m² living room between €700 and €1,000. If the insulation is integrated into a false ceiling already planned within another renovation, the extra cost drops to €10-20/m² (insulation material and anti-vibration suspension). The typical improvement of a suspended ceiling with acoustic hangers, 50-70 mm mineral wool and double board is 15-20 dB versus the bare slab. Replacing the standard board with high-density acoustic board (Placo Phonique or Knauf Diamant) adds a further 3-5 dB per the manufacturer datasheet. As a reference, the Spanish CTE DB-HR code requires DnT,A of at least 50 dBA between different dwellings, and for every 10 dB gained the ear perceives roughly half the noise: from audible conversation to imperceptible murmur.
The complete system loses 12-15 cm: anti-vibration hanger, cavity with 50-70 mm mineral wool and 12.5-15 mm double board. Before quoting we check the resulting clear height: we recommend keeping at least 2.50 m in main rooms, the usual minimum for habitability certificates. In flats with 2.60-2.70 m ceilings, common in Palma buildings from the 1960s-80s, the system remains viable in bedrooms and living rooms.
No. Sound insulation depends on mass and decoupling: the mass law states that doubling the mass of an element adds about 6 theoretical dB. A foam panel weighs under 1 kg/m² versus roughly 9 kg/m² for a single 12.5 mm plasterboard (manufacturer datasheet), and so-called acoustic paint is under 1 mm thick: neither measurably reduces upstairs-neighbour noise. Foams are for internal absorption (the reverberation of your own room), not for insulation. The real minimal-works alternative is a dry suspended ceiling: 1-3 days, no rubble, with a measurable 15-20 dB improvement.
It reduces it, but honesty first: impact noise (footsteps, chairs, dropped objects) travels through the building structure and the optimal fix is a floating floor in the flat above — the CTE DB-HR caps impact level at L'nT,w of 65 dB maximum. A decoupled suspended ceiling on acoustic hangers noticeably attenuates both airborne and impact noise, and in most neighbour disputes it is enough. But if the initial measurement reveals severe impact noise on a lightweight slab, we tell you before quoting: we would rather lose a job than install a ceiling that does not solve your problem.
From 1 to 3 working days per room. A 12 m² bedroom is normally completed in 1-2 days: day one covers hangers, framing and mineral wool; day two the double board, perimeter sealing with resilient band and joint treatment. After 24-48 hours of joint drying the ceiling is ready to paint. It is dry construction: we work with floor protection and dust extraction, no rubble and no skip.
Placo Phonique (blue high-density board with modified gypsum core) and Knauf Diamant (high-hardness, high-density board): per the Placo and Knauf technical datasheets, they add 3-5 dB versus standard BA13 board in the same system. We install them in a double layer with staggered joints on acoustic hangers, 50-70 mm mineral wool in the cavity and perimeter sealing with resilient band. The exact system is sized after the sound-meter measurement of the initial visit, free across Mallorca.
