Drywall cove ceilings and feature ceilings with indirect light in Mallorca

We design and build drywall coves with hidden LED strip across Mallorca: standard 12-15 cm trough, executed band at 45-80€/m² per 2026 rates and a fixed per-linear-metre quote in 24-48 h after the free site visit. 6,000+ projects since 2004.

Feature ceilings

What a cove (foseado) is and why it transforms any room

A cove (foseado) is a perimeter or central drop in the false ceiling creating a 12-15 cm trough that houses a hidden LED strip: light bounces off the ceiling producing glare-free indirect illumination. It is the single most transformative feature in Mallorca renovations for living rooms, bedrooms and hallways, and combines with hidden curtain recesses, two-level coffers and curves built with flexible board.

At Pladur Mallorca we have been building coves inside ceiling and full renovations since 2004, with 6,000+ projects delivered. We work with Placo and Knauf board, dimmable 24V LED strip with CRI ≥90 and the driver always in an accessible hatch. And we tell you straight when it is NOT worth it: below 2.45 m of clear height we recommend limiting the cove to a narrow perimeter band or ruling it out.

Types of cove

Types of drywall cove and feature ceiling we build

All types share the 2026 rate band of 45-80€/m² of executed band (materials + labour, VAT not included). The exact per-linear-metre amount is quoted at the free site visit, based on the design, the levels and the curtain recess.

Perimeter cove

The classic: a 12-15 cm trough around the whole contour of the room with hidden LED strip washing the ceiling. The most requested option in living rooms and bedrooms, and usually the most economical — lower part of the 45-80€/m² band.

Floating central island

A central volume that appears to float thanks to perimeter light on all four sides. It orders the room around a table or sofa area and needs its own independent frame — middle of the rate band. Requires enough clear height: we advise against it below 2.50 m.

Curved cove

Organic curves and radii built with flexible Placo Glasroc F board. The extra framing hours and board cost place it at the top of the 45-80€/m² band and add 1-2 days to the schedule. The result: a ceiling impossible to replicate with masonry.

Cove with hidden curtain recess

The trough widens to 35-40 cm along the window wall to house a motorised curtain track out of sight. Curtains appear to drop straight from the ceiling. Upper-middle part of the rate band; the track and motor are quoted separately by your curtain supplier.

Two-level ceiling with stepped coffers

Two or more ceiling planes with stepped coffers and light in each step. It zones open-plan spaces (kitchen-living room) without partitions. Priced as the sum of executed bands — upper part of the range, always itemised per linear metre in the quote.

Every type accepts dimmable 24V strip and home automation (DALI, KNX, Zigbee). If you want the full technical detail on strips, drivers and scenes, read our guide ondrywall ceilings with LED.

Technical detail

The technical detail that separates a good cove from a mediocre one

A cove is 20% drywall and 80% light planning. These are the four decisions we make on every project — and the typical mistakes we fix from other installs: corner shadows, inaccessible drivers and troughs not sized for the strip output.

01

24V strip instead of 12V

A 24V strip has lower voltage drop: it runs twice as long with uniform brightness and no visible flicker. With 12V, beyond roughly 5 m the far end visibly dims — and a living-room perimeter easily adds up to 15-25 linear metres. Installed 24V strip with driver: 15-25€/lm.

02

Driver in an accessible hatch

The driver is the component most often replaced in maintenance. We house it in a hatch or accessible zone — never sealed inside the trough — so it swaps out in minutes without breaking board. We size it with a 20% margin over the strip load.

03

Colour temperature per room

2700-3000K in bedrooms and living rooms (warm white), 3000-4000K in kitchens and bathrooms (neutral, better colour on food and skin), 4000K in work areas. Dimmable as standard, so the same cove serves dinner and reading scenes.

04

CRI of 90 or higher

The colour rendering index measures how faithfully a light source reproduces colour. We install CRI ≥90 strip as standard and recommend CRI ≥95 in hospitality and retail, where skin, textiles and food must look right.

How we work

Process: from drawing to lit ceiling in 1-3 days

The same five steps on every cove, whether it is a bedroom perimeter or a two-level living room in a villa.

01

Design on plan or site visit

We draw the cove, levels and light points over your floor plan or measure on site. We check the clear ceiling height: below 2.45 m we honestly advise a narrow perimeter cove or none at all.

02

Fixed quote per linear metre in 24-48h

Written quote itemising structure, board, LED strip and driver. The exact per-linear-metre amount depends on the design, the levels and the curtain recess — that is why it is priced after the visit.

03

Framing and boarding in 1-3 days

Galvanised steel structure and Placo/Knauf board; curved coves use flexible board and add 1-2 days. Clean execution with floor protection.

04

LED strip and driver integration

Dimmable 24V strip with CRI 90 or higher, colour temperature chosen per room (2700K bedrooms, 3000-4000K kitchens and bathrooms) and driver housed in an accessible hatch, never sealed inside the trough.

05

Ready-to-paint finish

Joint treatment, corner trims and final check of the light line so there are no shadows in the corners. Ready to paint in 24-48 h.

A cove (foseado) is a perimeter or central drop in the false ceiling creating a 12-15 cm trough that houses a hidden LED strip: light bounces off the ceiling plane and produces glare-free indirect illumination. Beyond the light itself, a cove visually orders the room, allows a hidden curtain recess (35-40 cm trough for a motorised track) and creates two-level ceilings with stepped coffers. It is the single detail that most transforms a living room, bedroom or hallway in a renovation.

Per our 2026 rates, a perimeter cove with indirect LED sits at €45-80/m² of executed band (materials + labour, VAT not included), with a standard 12-15 cm trough. The exact amount is quoted per linear metre at the free site visit, because it depends on the design, the levels and whether it integrates a hidden curtain recess. The installed 24V LED strip with driver adds €15-25 per linear metre. Written fixed quote in 24-48 hours.

The trough drops 12-15 cm below the finished ceiling plane; if built over a complete false ceiling, the general plane also loses 4-6 cm from the slab. Our honest recommendation: keep a final clear height of at least 2.50 m in living rooms and bedrooms. Below 2.45 m we advise limiting the design to a narrow perimeter cove or ruling out a central island, as it would visually compress the room. We verify this with measurements at the site visit.

We work with dimmable 24V strip as standard: it has lower voltage drop than 12V, allowing runs twice as long with uniform brightness and no visible flicker. With 12V, beyond roughly 5 m per run the voltage drop already causes noticeable brightness loss at the far end, and a living-room perimeter cove typically adds up to 15-25 linear metres. 12V strip only makes sense for very short runs. In both cases we require CRI of 90 or higher for faithful colour rendering.

Always in an accessible hatch: a small access panel in the cove itself, a utility cupboard or an accessible zone of the false ceiling. The driver is the component most often replaced in maintenance, and housed in a hatch it swaps out in minutes without opening the ceiling. One of the most common mistakes we fix from other installs is drivers sealed inside the trough: when they fail, board has to be broken and repainted. We also size the driver with a 20% margin over the strip load to extend its service life.

Bedrooms and living rooms: 2700-3000K (warm white, cosy atmosphere). Kitchens and bathrooms: 3000-4000K (neutral, better colour rendering on food and skin). Work areas: 4000K. Our standard is CRI of 90 or higher; for hospitality and retail we recommend CRI 95 or higher. With dimmable strip and a compatible driver you can programme scenes (day, dinner, night) and integrate the cove into DALI, KNX or Zigbee home automation.

A standard room takes 1-3 days: day 1 setting out, framing and levels; day 2 boarding plus LED strip and driver integration; day 3 joint treatment and ready-to-paint finish. Curved coves with flexible board add 1-2 days for the extra framing work. Before starting, we deliver a fixed quote in 24-48 hours after the site visit, with the cove drawing and light points defined on plan.

Yes. If the existing ceiling is sound and there is a light point nearby, a dropped perimeter band is fixed directly to the current ceiling without a complete false ceiling: it is the most economical option within the €45-80/m² executed band. However, if HVAC or wiring needs routing, or the original ceiling is out of level, a complete false ceiling (from €29/m² per 2026 rates) with the cove integrated is the better call: the extra cost pays off with perfect flatness and hidden services. We tell you which one suits your case at the visit.
