What is moisture-resistant (H) board?
Placa H (BA13 H under EN 520) is a plasterboard whose gypsum core incorporates siloxane and paraffin additives that repel water. You will find it under brand names Placo Pregyhidro (Saint-Gobain), Knauf Diamant H, Pladur WA and Lafarge Rigimpact. Identified by its green colour (standard boards are grey, F fire boards pink).
The difference from the standard board is decisive: while standard BA13 absorbs more than 30% of its weight in water after 2 hours of immersion, type H1 board absorbs less than 5%. This resistance makes it essential for bathroom and kitchen renovations and any space with relative humidity between 70 and 85%.
For seafront properties in Mallorca we build a complete Saint-Gobain system: Aquapanel cement board outside, Glasroc H Ocean (fibreglass, not cellulose, so no mould) inside, with Z275 zinc-coated screws and Placo Vario semi-permeable vapour barrier. Absorption below 5 % after 2h immersion (vs 30% for standard type A board), thanks to siloxane additives in the gypsum core. Suitable for 70-85% RH in bathrooms and kitchens, but requires a protective finish: tiles, Class 3 anti-damp paint or vinyl.
Yes, with mechanical ventilation (extractor fan ≥90 m³/h) and Class 3 or higher anti-damp paint. Standard solution in bathroom renovations for holiday apartments and hotels in Mallorca: integrates IP44 LED lighting, hides extraction and eases maintenance. For showers without screens or wellness areas, we use Glasroc H Ocean (Saint-Gobain) with a reinforced core and an outer face resistant to liquid water.
Service life matches the building's (50-80 years) when installed correctly. Siloxane moisture-resistant additives do not degrade over time or through wet-dry cycling. Critical points: perimeter sealing with SikaBond or equivalent sealant (10-15 year durability), joints with fibreglass mesh and Z275 galvanised screws. Basic maintenance every 5 years (repainting with anti-damp paint) ensures top performance.

We recommend Class 3 fungicidal paint with in-can biocides active for 5-7 years.
