Technical considerations in Mallorca

Minimum height

Habitability rules require 2.50 m clear in habitable rooms. A drywall false ceiling with LED drops 10-15 cm (recessed downlight), 15-25 cm with cove and backlighting, and 25-30 cm with HVAC ducts. Recommended minimum original height: 2.60-2.70 m.

In flats in central Palma with 3-4.5 m ceilings this is not a problem. In modern 2.60 m flats: opt for low-profile downlights (35-50 mm) or flexible strips without cove.

HVAC coordination

For ducted A/C: ducts need 20-30 cm. Drywall installer and HVAC engineer must coordinate grille and diffuser positions before closing the ceiling.

Internal bathroom ventilation

Bathrooms without a window: extractor with ducted outlet through the false ceiling to roof or façade (UNE 100012). Plan the route before installation.

LED heat dissipation

Downlights need rear space to dissipate heat (minimum 5 cm above the body). Respect ventilation to achieve declared lifespan (30,000-50,000 hours).

Typical mistakes when installing LED in drywall ceilings

We see these every week on jobs we are called in to fix. The five most expensive to repair after the fact:

1. Shadows and light gaps in the corners

Cutting the strip at 90° and joining it with quick connectors leaves 2-4 cm dark gaps that read as a shadow in every corner of the cove. Our standard fix: solder the corner joints (or loop the strip around without cutting it) and plan the circuit so cuts land on straight runs, never in the corner.

2. Inaccessible drivers

The driver fails long before the strip: the power supply's electronics are almost always the first thing to go, while the strip is rated for 30,000-50,000 hours. If the driver is walled in without a hatch, restoring the light means opening up the ceiling. House rule: driver always in an accessible hatch (access panel, cabinet or demountable ceiling section) and sized with 20-25% headroom over the strip's total power.

3. Badly sized trough

With a trough under 10 cm the strip is visible from the far end of the room and shows dots; with the upstand too low, it glares; with the strip less than 10 cm from the upper ceiling, the light draws a hard stripe instead of a gradient. 4. Cheap low-CRI strip

A strip with CRI < 80 dulls the colours of the whole room: yellowish woods, greyed textiles. Demand CRI ≥ 90 in homes (≥ 95 in hospitality) and verify the figure on the datasheet, not in the listing title.

5. A single circuit with no dimming

Wiring downlights and the indirect strip to the same switch with no dimmer wastes half the system: indirect light exists to be dimmed. Separating general/indirect/accent costs €60-120 per dimmer and is what turns a ceiling with lights into a lighting project.
